P2i's technology is based on PhD research carried out by P2i's now CTO, Dr Stephen Coulson, at Durham University.

P2i originated as a project within the UK Government's Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (DSTL), to make soldiers' protective clothing more effective against chemical attack while maintaining comfort.

P2i Limited was established in 2004 as the first DSTL Technology Transfer company, created to commercialize technologies developed by the UK Government.

Now operating within five core sectors, in 2010 P2i went full circle and delivered our first military clothing system back the Ministry of Defence  – a major milestone in our evolution as a company. Furthermore, having proven the commercial value of our liquid repellent nano-coating , we added potentially valuable new technologies with the acquisition of Surface Innovations Ltd (SIL). Founded in 2001 by Professor Jas Pal Badyal as a spin-out from Durham University, SIL brings 14 additional nano-coating patent families to P2i in areas such as antimicrobial, super wettable and protein resistance.

The acquisition of UK-based Surface Innovations Ltd will enable us to commercialize new functional nano-coatings for our customers beyond liquid repellency. Today P2i has 57 patent families providing an unrivalled portfolio of technologies that will drive our ambition to become the global commercial leader in functional nano-coatings.
